About

My name is Amelia Avila, birth doula, childbirth educator, experienced mother to eight, military spouse (reitred). My husband and I have been in the Hampton Roads area since 1998. As my husband is so fond of saying, “We have eight children. They are all boys except for seven of them!” We also currently have seven grandchildren.

After attending friends’ births when I was a young adult, I was truly amazed and filled with wonder. It became my desire to study midwifery or be involved in the birth field in some capacity. It was at our first granddaughter’s birth in 2005 that I realized how much I enjoyed providing labor and birth support. Becoming a doula has been a realization of this dream and has brought me much satisfaction and joy.

As the wife of a 30 year US Navy veteran, I identify with and appreciate the sacrifice of being a military family. I provide labor and birth support to military families at a 10% discount. Also, I volunteer with The Military Doula (Special Ops Doula), which provides volunteer doulas for women whose spouses are deployed at the time of the birth (subject to availability).

Additionally, I have a special place in my heart for teen or single moms who find themselves in a crisis pregnancy, and provide free or discounted services (based on financial need) for them. A crisis pregnancy can be difficult, but I firmly believe that with adequate support, it can also become one of the most positive experiences in life. I provide non-judgmental support before, during, and after birth, along with resources for moms who find themselves alone and expecting.

I am currently certified as a birth doula through Doulas of North America (DONA) and Mercy in Action, and as a childbirth educator through CAPPA. Additionally, I have taken over eighty hours of breastfeeding education courses, and am passionate about helping women have a successful breastfeeding experience.

As your doula, it will be my privilege and honor to help you have a safe and happy birth experience. Email me at amelia@birthmadre.com if you’d like to schedule a free, no obligation consultation. You may also call or text me at (757) 912-0344. (This is a Google Voice number, so you will have to state your name first. I am leary about publishing my actual cell phone number online. )
